When you enable Find My iPhone on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, your Apple ID will be safely stored on Apple's servers and will be associated with your device. From that moment your password will be required in order to disable the Find My iPhone feature, erase the device or re-activate it and use it.

To enable Find My iPhone on your device you should perform the following steps:

  1. First of all, tap Settings.
  2. In the next step choose iCloud.
  3. If it is a necessary sign in with your Apple ID.
  4. Finally, turn to Find My iPhone on.

What to do if my device was stolen or lost?

You ought to activate the Lost Mode by using Find My iPhone as soon as possible.

Lost Mode disables the screen using a four-digit code and allows you to send and display a custom message to your device (it may help you in the recovery of the device). Custom message will be displayed on the device even when you choose to erase your phone or tablet remotely.

In order to switch on the Lost mode in your device, log in to the following website icloud.com/find on PC or use the Find My iPhone app for iOS.

How to make sure that a device does not have the Lock Mode activated?

When you buy an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch from someone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Seller, you will need to check on your own whether the device has been erased and is not already associated with an account of the previous owner.

  • One way to do this is to check the current status of the lock activation device via the icloud.com/activationlock.
  • This feature can be also checked as follows:
  1. At first, turn on the device and move the slider to unlock it.
  2. If the display shows the lock screen or main screen, the device has not been fully reset. Ask the seller to completely erase the device by choosing Settings> General> Reset> Erase All Content and Settings.
  3. Begin the process of configuring the device.
  4. After selecting the language, country and connecting to the Wi-Fi network, the phone will proceed with activation. If you are asked to enter your Apple ID and password, the device still must be linked to the previous owner's account. Give the phone to the seller and ask for a password. If the previous owner is not available to reach, you can ask to remove the device from your account via the icloud.com/find. Do not accept using your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch if it is not removed from the account of the previous owner.
  5. The device is ready to use as soon as it displays "Set up the iPhone", "Configure the iPad" or "Set iPod" screen.
